Nestled within the unspoiled coastal landscape of Nova Scotia on Canada’s Atlantic coast, Safe Island Canada is taking shape in Mitchell Bay. It is a place where space, nature, and silence come together in a unique way.
Set on a peninsula of around 70 hectares and a nearby island overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a retreat is emerging among coastal forests, open meadows, and small coves. The landscape is wide and untouched, shaped by the sea, the wind, and the quiet rhythm of nature.
The lodges of Safe Island Canada draw inspiration from traditional Canadian timber architecture and combine natural materials with a clear, timeless design. Large windows open views into the surrounding landscape and allow light, sky, and nature to become part of the living spaces.
The opening of the first lodge at Safe Island Canada is planned for July 2026.The region around Mitchell Bay in Nova Scotia is considered one of the most unspoiled coastal landscapes in Canada. From Safe Island, paths lead directly along the Atlantic coast, through forests, and across wide natural areas.

Safe Island Canada follows a clear vision: to create a place where tranquility, nature, and independence come together. On a peninsula in Nova Scotia, a retreat with 24 lodges is gradually taking shape, complemented by a central lodge house with dining room, kitchen, and library. It will be a place for connection, conversation, and quiet evenings by the fireplace.Paths lead through forests and along the coastline to viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic, to quiet places within the landscape, and to spaces where time begins to slow down again.
A central part of this vision is self-sufficiency in harmony with nature. Energy is generated from sun and wind, while fruit trees, gardens, and greenhouses support a local food supply.
In this way, a place is emerging in Nova Scotia that connects modern architecture with natural cycles. It is reduced, independent, and consciously embedded in the surrounding landscape.
From July 2026 onward, the first lodges will begin to bring this vision to life.

By the end of 2025, significant construction progress has been made at Safe Island Canada.Inside the building, the staircase has been installed, the wooden floors on the upper level have been fully completed, and the interior doors have been fitted. The tiling work is now around 60 percent finished. The first sanitary installations are also in place. One shower and one toilet have already been fully installed and are operational. At the same time, the kitchens have been fitted and the underfloor heating system has been put into operation.Work on the exterior has also progressed steadily. Balcony railings and flooring have been completed, giving the building more and more of its final appearance. An important step toward sustainability has also been achieved. The solar power system is now in operation and already generating electricity. In the future orchard, the first ten fruit trees have been planted, marking a small beginning for the planned self-sufficiency at Safe Island Canada.

By the end of May 2025, several important milestones have been completed at Safe Island Canada.Windows and terrace doors have been installed, giving the building its final silhouette for the first time. The entrance gate is now also in place, marking the access to the property.Below the house, the septic tank has been installed and connected. On the ground floor, the underfloor heating is currently being laid, while on the upper floor the underfloor heating and screed have already been completed.Inside the building, another central element has arrived. The stove in the living area, also referred to as the library space, is already in its place. The interior staircase was crafted in British Columbia and will be picked up in early June on our small “Staircase to Heaven” tour. The surrounding landscape is also taking shape. The trail leading to the southern tip of the peninsula has been completed, and a natural water source has been captured and secured.Additional windows are currently still in a shipping container at the port of Halifax, waiting to be transported to the island.
At the beginning of November 2024, the building at Safe Island Canada is increasingly taking shape. The roof structure has been completed, and the next steps will be the installation of the roof insulation and the final roof covering. The gable walls are already in place, giving the house its clear architectural form.In the lower level, the first electrical lines are currently being installed, while preparations for the underfloor heating system are underway. The future solar power supply is also already being planned and prepared. In the living area, the stove is being installed, which will later become the central gathering point of the house. At the same time, a new boat dock is being built in the harbor, which will make access to the island easier in the future.
Safe Island Canada stands for space, tranquility, and unspoiled nature. Clear air, untouched landscapes, and the quiet coastal surroundings create a place for retreat, relaxation, and renewed energy.
